Tips are small, as a rule, money that is given to service personnel in excess of the amount specified in the invoice. But, in general, this money can be a significant part of income. In some countries, giving tips is not accepted, and in others, on the contrary, it is considered indecent to not hand them.
In many taverns of Russia in the 19th century, sex workers, as the waiters were then called, were not paid, they worked only for money received from visitors “for tea.” Hence the expression “tip.” At the same time, the working day lasted for 16 hours. Only in 1902, tavern workers created their own trade union: “Society of waiters and other tavern service workers”.
In Ilf and Petrov’s famous novel “The Twelve Chairs,” the janitor Tikhon longed for his generous gentleman, who had left, as Tikhon believed, to Paris. The position of the janitor in tsarist Russia was indeed prestigious. Unofficially, it was the rule of the janitor to congratulate with the holidays (Christmas, New Year, Easter, name day), the rich residents of their site. And they, in turn, did not leave him without remuneration. Every self-respecting janitor had a list with patrons’ birthdays.
In France, attendants do not particularly indulge in tips. Moreover, the bill has already included the amount of service. But, sometimes customers leave, in a sign of gratitude, 1 – 2 euros. In the elite restaurants a little more.
In Brazil, tips are also included in the bill. But there is one peculiarity – the client of the restaurant can refuse to pay for the “service” column if he is not satisfied with something.
But in Japan or New Zealand, tips may be perceived as an insult. In many Japanese hotels, restaurants and taxis, you can see the announcement: “We do not take tips, as we earn well.”
A welcome guest in all restaurants is the famous American actor Johnny Depp. For him to leave the maintenance staff the amount of several thousand dollars is a common thing. Often the size of the tip significantly exceeds the cost of ordered dishes.
A few years ago, Britney Spears went to a restaurant with two sons: 6-year-old Sean and 5-year-old Jayden. Kids made a real pogrom there, scattering plates and chairs. Even star mom could not cope with them. Came to the aid of one of the waiters, who was able to interest the children in conversation, and saved his institution from large losses. In gratitude, Britney Spears gave the waiter $ 300 and her autograph.
One of the wealthy visitors to the casino in Monte Carlo tore off a prize of $ 15 million. To celebrate, I distributed to the maintenance personnel chips in a million.
A modest waitress, Jessica Osbourne, from the pizzeria of the American state of Indiana, could not even think that she would ever receive a tip of $ 10,000. This amount was handed to her by one of the attendees, because she listened to her story about family problems. True, a generous philanthropist set one condition – the money must be spent on education.
